History of Kissimmee

The name “Kissimmee” is said to have originated from the Indian name “Cacema,” which means “long water.” The city of Kissimmee has a rich historical background. In the 1700s, the native tribes of Florida were driven inland as Spain, England, and the American Colonies battled over the territory. America declared independence from England in 1776, but Florida remained a colony with British loyalty. In 1779, Spain captured Pensacola and gained control over West Florida. By 1783, Spain had full possession of the Florida and Louisiana territory.

Florida achieved statehood in 1845 and began to grow. Between 1873 and 1884, the state opened its first post office, newspaper, schoolhouse, church, and hardware store. Makinson Hardware remains Florida’s oldest operating hardware store, having first opened its doors in downtown Kissimmee in 1884. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Kissimmee raced ahead in civilization with the aid of Hamilton Disston, one of the largest real estate developers in the nation at the time. With the innovative use of steamships to transport cargo, Kissimmee boomed until the railways gained ground. Two consecutive freezes then stopped the citrus industry and caused cattle ranching to become the most integral part of the city’s economy.

Electricity was introduced to Kissimmee in 1900 and the Kissimmee Chamber of Commerce was chartered in 1924. Over the next few decades, ranching became an integral part of the local economy and still is today, although the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971 shifted the economy more toward tourism and development. As of 2011, Kissimmee boasts a population of nearly 60,000 residents.
